Plum Family in front of the Plum Center.

Fairfax County Public Schools, 1965-1996. Positions included teacher, Assistant Coordinator of Adult and Community Education, Director of Instruction, and Director of Adult and Community Education. Directed growth of adult education to be one of the largest public school adult education programs in the nation. The Plum Center for Lifelong Learning was named in recognition of his service.

Member of Virginia House of Delegates, 1978-1980, 1982-2024, Longest serving member of the House upon retirement in 2024. Second longest serving member ever in the House of Delegates.

Founder and Chairman of the Dulles Corridor Rail Association (DCRA), 1989-2007. Successfully advocated for a 12-mile six-billion dollars extension of the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit System from Falls Church to Reston, Dulles Airport, and Loudoun County.

Lecturer in history of Virginia at the OSHER Lifelong Institute  (OLLI) at Geroge Mason University. (unpaid)
