Pre-Session Town Meeting in January

Join Senator Janet Howell and me for our annual Public Meeting prior to the upcoming General Assembly session on Thursday, January 3, 2008, 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. in the Community Room of the Reston Community Center at Hunters Woods. Let us hear from you about issues affecting our neighborhoods and our region.

I have also scheduled a Public Meeting with Senator Mark Herring on Monday, January 7, 7:30 to 9:00 p.m. at Fox Mill Elementary School, 2601 Viking Drive, Herndon. Senator Herring and I look forward to seeing you and having your views.

Plum Honored by Coalition

The Coalition for Northern Virginians with Mental Disabilities presented "The Distinguished Leadership Award" to Delegate Kenneth R. Plum" as an expression of the Coalition's deepest appreciation for his outstanding dedication on behalf of people with mental disabilities, their service providers and their families."

The Sallie Mae Fund provides a variety of free educational resources on preparing and paying for college, in English and Spanish, at www.salliemaefund.org.

According to the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality’s Annual Recycling Rate Report, the Old Dominion state achieved a recycling rate of 38.4 percent for the 2006 calendar year, up 6.2 percentage points over the state’s 2005 annual rate of 32.2 percent. As much as 3.7 million tons of materials was recovered in 2006, up from the 2.8 million tons recouped in 2005. For more information go to www.deq.state.va.us. Click on “Programs” and “Recycling.”

The Bike Virginia 2008 Website is up and running. In addition, registration for the 21st Annual Bicycling Adventure has opened. The website is www.bikevirginia.org.

The National Association for College Admission Counseling (NACAC) has two new, free college planning guides, “Tips for Parents with Middle School Teens” and “Tips for Parents with High School Teens.” Download free copies at www.nacacnet.org.

Calendar of Events

The House Appropriations and Senate Finance Committees of the Virginia General Assembly will hold regional public hearings on the Governor’s proposed 2008-2010 biennial state budget on Thursday, January 3 at 12:00 noon at the Johnson Center at George Mason University. The Committees will also hold a hearing on Monday, January 14, 1:00 p.m., in the General Assembly Building, House Room D, in Richmond. Speakers will be taken in the order of registration.

The Virginia General Assembly’s Fairfax County Delegation will hold a public hearing on Saturday, January 5, 2008, beginning at 9:00 a.m. at the Fairfax County Government Center, 12000 Government Center Parkway, Fairfax. The public is invited to attend and comment. People wanting to sign up to speak at the hearing should contact the Fairfax County Office of the Clerk to the Board of Supervisors at 703.324.3151, TTY 711, by noon on Friday, January 4. Speakers also may sign up at the hearing.

The National Council for Science and the Environment will sponsor the 8th National Conference on Science, Policy, and the Environment, Climate Change Science and Solutions, to develop comprehensive strategies for protecting people and the planet against rapid climate change. The conference will be held January 16-18, 2008, at the Ronald Reagan Building and International Trade Center in Washington, DC.
